3 questions to LoRa Alliance

1. What brings LoRa Alliance® to SIDO event this year, and can you tell us about LoRa Alliance?

LoRa Alliance is the global nonprofit standards organisation behind LoRaWAN®, the leading low-power wide-area network technology for the Internet of Things. Today our ecosystem includes more than 300 members, with 57 new members joining in the last year alone. 

France has long been one of our strongest markets, with a dense industrial base across smart buildings, energy, agriculture, and smart cities that has adopted the technology at real scale. 

SIDO brings together exactly the kind of decision-makers we want to reach out to: people responsible for digitalisation projects who need connectivity solutions that are proven and ready to deploy today, not five years from now. Several LoRa Alliance members will be exhibiting this year, and we see real value in supporting our ecosystem’s presence and continuing to build relationships with French industry.


2. SIDO is built around the convergence of IoT, AI, robotics, and XR. Where does LoRaWAN fit into that convergence, especially as Physical AI becomes a bigger part of the conversation?

SIDO's whole premise is convergence: IoT, AI, robotics, and XR increasingly working together rather than sitting in separate categories. LoRaWAN sits right underneath that, as the connectivity standard that lets real-world data actually get collected at scale, and then reused as new applications get added. 

Thanks to its long range, deep indoor penetration and very low power consumption, sensors can run for years and process data close to the source, wherever that data lives: a city street, a factory floor, a remote field. 

We see that close to home too. In Lambersart, near Lille, a private LoRaWAN network has powered more than 16 use cases over eight years, from smart street lighting to water and energy monitoring, delivering a 30% reduction in lighting energy costs and full ROI within five years, all on the same network. That same foundation is exactly what makes Physical AI possible: AI systems fed real-world data through sensors, capable of triggering actions back in the physical world. In Ghana and Brazil, for example, satellite-connected LoRaWAN sensors combined with AI imaging are catching Black Sigatoka, a damaging banana disease, before symptoms even spread. Whether it's a city adding its next use case or an AI model acting on a live signal, LoRaWAN is the layer making it possible.


3. How does LoRa Alliance see LoRaWAN's role in the broader wireless connectivity landscape going forward?

We see LoRaWAN as the fourth pillar of wireless connectivity, standing alongside cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Together these technologies have brought billions of IoT connections online, but that was only ever the beginning. 

Today, more than 125 million devices are connected worldwide via LoRaWAN, growing at 25% year on year, supported by over 650 certified devices and close to 1,000 products in our catalogue. That scale is only the foundation. The next challenge is making IoT more essential, not just more widespread, and LoRaWAN's combination of accessibility, low cost, and a genuinely global ecosystem, including satellite-backed coverage that reaches where terrestrial networks cannot, puts it in a strong position to lead that shift. 

Our ambition is for LoRaWAN to be available almost everywhere, with the same reach as cellular networks, so that whenever a business needs to connect a sensor, LoRaWAN is the natural choice.
