DATAWISE: AI-Powered Automated Annotation
The DATAWISE project will automate data annotation in the field ofartificial intelligence and computer vision.Grenoble, October 1, 2024 – Innovation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) is about to take a new step forward thanks to the DATAWISE project. Led by Neovision, in partnership with the Laboratory of Computer Science in Images and Information Systems (LIRIS – CNRS / INSA Lyon / Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 / Université Lumière Lyon 2 / Ecole Centrale de Lyon) and supported by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, this project promises to significantly accelerate the data annotation process, a key element for training high-performance AI models in computer vision.
The challenge of annotated data
“Having large amounts of quality data is essential to improving the performance of AI models. In the field of computer vision, the tasks of cleaning and annotating this data are often long, tedious and time-consuming, especially because they are done manually. This data preparation can considerably slow down AI development cycles and distract Data Scientists from their core business: the analysis and valorization of data,” explains Stefan Duffner, PhD in Computer Science at LIRIS.
Automating annotation will accelerate AI development cycles.
Funded by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region's R&D Booster program, the DATAWISE project aims to develop innovative technologies to automate data annotation and cleaning tasks. This collaboration between Neovision and LIRIS will accelerate AI model development cycles while improving performance and reducing bias. Thanks to this automation, data scientists will be able to focus on higher-value tasks, such as data analysis and algorithm optimization, without being hampered by repetitive data preparation steps.
A strategic partnership
The DATAWISE project brings together leading players in their respective fields: Neovision, a Grenoble-based company specializing in the development of custom AI solutions, and LIRIS, a Lyon-based research laboratory with scientific expertise in information processing, image analysis, and information systems. This partnership combines technical know-how and academic advancements to create a robust solution capable of meeting the complex challenges of modern AI development. “AI dedicated to image processing is often initially trained on simple tasks, such as recognizing dogs or cats, before moving on to more complex objects. This learning method sometimes limits their performance. Our ambition is to develop models capable of training directly on complex industrial data, without requiring massive manual data preparation. This represents a significant leap forward in performance and considerably accelerates the process of creating AI solutions,” explains Lucas Nacsa, CEO of Neovision.
A solution for the future of AI
With DATAWISE, Neovision and LIRIS aim to transform how visual data, such as photos, is prepared for processing by AI models. The project will open new perspectives for all industrial sectors, enabling them to leverage previously untapped databases at a lower cost. The technologies developed within DATAWISE will make artificial intelligence solutions more accessible to all businesses, thereby strengthening their competitiveness. Ultimately, the integration of large language models (LLMs) into the tools developed by DATAWISE will optimize usability and encourage wider adoption of these solutions by users.
